Why Are Concrete Vaults Necessary?
When people are purchasing interment spaces, whether they are pre-planning or purchasing one after the loss of a loved one, one question that they frequently have is why it is necessary to purchase a concrete vault in addition to a casket or an urn. At our cemetery, concrete vaults are required for all interment spaces for preservation purposes.
Concrete vaults serve to protect the casket or urn from water and damage from the weight of the soil. As a porous material, concrete does allow some water to seep through, but it provides a sufficient level of protection. It also helps to prevent soil from collapsing around the casket or urn. Immediately after interment, some settling of the soil occurs naturally and will be filled in by the cemetery if necessary, but the vault will keep the space in good condition in the long run.
